For decades, they have entertained the nation from behind a microphone, educating generations with their musical tastes. But the future of the DJ looks a little less certain today, after the head of Radio 1 admitted he is struggling to find new talent in a world of Youtubers and reality TV.Ben Cooper, controller of the BBC station, said it is becoming increasingly difficult to find talented new presenters, as tastes in youth culture change. Asked about some of his current Radio 1 DJs, and whether they were approaching an age where they would be moved onto an older station, Cooper said: “I’m always looking for fresh, new talent. I’m always looking for new presenters.”I think it’s really weird, at the moment, how it’s getting harder.”It’s getting hard to find new presenter talent because you don’t have the likes of MTV presenters, T4, CDUk, Top of the Pops… In part of plans to win over fresh audiences to DAB radio, he has now launched a special series of programmes for a three-day “pop up radio”, celebrating five decades of the youth station. Radio 1 Vintage will see the likes of Tony Blackburn return to the airwaves, as they broadcast 50 hours starring 50 DJs and the best of their original shows.Featured DJs will include John Peel, Noel Edmonds, Bob Harris, Kenny Everett, Zoe Ball, Chris Moyles, Mike Read and Tim Westwood, intended to be the best of each generation for listeners to reminisce. “It’s really hard to find those next group of presenters coming up.” Radio 1 Vintage will begin on Saturday, September 30, and will be available on DAB radio, online and on the app.It will include personal interviews with Radio 1 DJs past and present, omitting those who have since been disgraced. As well as classics songs from each era, it will include some of the jingles recorded for the BBC by artists such as Abba, Jimi Hendrix and The Who.Blackburn described launching Radio 1 on September 30 1967 as “undoubtedly, the highlight of my career”. YouTubers Dan and Phil meet a fan Cooper added student radio and community stations were the only remaining reliable source for spotting new talent. On the future of the industry, he said everyone is “addicted to phones”, with all radio stations needing to focus on winning digital audiences. The industry, he added, needs to “wake up” to the “narrow” way it currently measures success, and should swap concentrating on listener numbers alone and focus more on how radio impacts on fans’ lives across all medium.center_img Tony Blackburn will return to his Radio 1 roots Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp?
