Rural Bengal is open defecationfree CM

first_imgKolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has declared rural Bengal as Open Defecation Free (ODF) and said the target has been achieved much ahead of the schedule. She further added that the state government will now focus on solid waste management.Banerjee in a post wrote: “I am happy to share with you that rural Bengal is now open defecation free. Govt of India has confirmed our achievement which was our mission towards a cleaner and greener environment and safe living. 1.35 crore households have been covered under this Mission Nirmal Bangla programme. Our next focus would be solid waste management. My best wishes to all.” Also Read – Rs 13,000 crore investment to provide 2 lakh jobs: MamataAccording to the information available with the Panchayats and Rural Development department, in Mission Nirmal Bangla, the department had provided toilets to 65.96 lakh households since 2013-14 taking the total to 135.35 lakh households with toilets as found during the baseline survey. All villages, Gram Panchayats, blocks and districts are now Open Defecation Free. It may be recalled that Nadia was the first district in the country to be declared ODF by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Some NGOs have been deployed to conduct awareness campaigns along with the P&RD department. Maintenance of the toilets will be another important issue as no money will be given if the toilets become defunct. The state government is now emphasising on solid waste management. The Urban Development and Municipal Affairs department has asked all the municipalities and civic bodies to segregate garbage at source.last_img read more
