64bit Macs with older GPUs not supported by Mountain Lion

first_imgThere have been various rumors about what was in store for users of slightly older Mac computers when Mountain Lion arrives later this month. A supposed list of supported models leaked a few days ago, and now we know that to be genuine. Speculation has now moved on to why these models made the cut, while others didn’t.The list of supported products goes back a number of years, mostly to 2008 models. However, many of the machines left out are still running 64-bit chips, sometimes even the same ones in the supported Macs. Here again is the list for your perusal:iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)Xserver (Early 2009)The list of unsupported Macs is live on Apple’s Mountain Lion upgrade site, so it’s for real now. What it appears to come down to is that the previous generation Macs have less capable GPUs. OS X’s graphical subsystems have been updated in 10.8, and it’s possible support for these GPUs simply wasn’t a priority. The drivers for these older GPUs are from a time before 64-bit support was assumed on OS X. They would have originally shipped with 32-bit drivers. Apple could conceivably work up some new drivers to get these Macs on Mountain Lion, but that would be distinctly un-Apple.I still expect the Mac App Store to block unsupported Macs from downloading the new OS. The whole thing might be a little annoying for users of 3-4 year -old computers, but such is life when you sign up with Apple.More at Apple, via Hot Hardwarelast_img read more
