Big increase in Limerick Covid cases

THE NUMBER of cases of Covid-19 in some areas of Limerick have more than tripled, according latest figures from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre.Meanwhile the Central Statistics Office (CSO) has reported  ten deaths and 1,545 confirmed cases in the city and county between February 28 and October 16.Those worst hit are people who live in what are considered socially deprived areas, according to the CSO.Half of Limerick’s electoral areas have been affected, according to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre figures.There have been 600 cases of the virus reported across city and county in the last two weeks, with the overall incidence rate now standing at 300 per 1,000 head of population.Sign up for the weekly Limerick Post newsletter Sign Up The highest incidence was in the Adare/Rathkeale electoral area where the incidence was doubled to 442 per 1,000 head of pollution.As of 8pm on Tuesday, the HSE reported that there were 19 confirmed cases and seven suspected cases being cared for at University Hospital Limerick (UHL).One of those hospitalised is being treated in intensive care and the hospital currently has two critical care beds and two general hospital beds free.There were 90 cases of Covid confirmed in Limerick over the last two weeks compared to just 21 between September 23 and October 5.
