A man and woman in their 70s have died after the car they were in was hit by a Ford Transit van which was being pursued by police.Scotland Yard said police officers spotted a van being “driven erratically at speed” which failed to stop.The vehicle collided with a Citroen C3 on Footscray Road, Eltham, at just after midnight on Saturday.Paramedics were called, but both the male and female in the car were pronounced dead at the scene.The driver of the van was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst over the alcohol limit, driving while unfit through drugs and death by dangerous driving, the Metropolitan Police said.Officers added that the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.The incident follows four deaths this year involving police vehicles.Paul Radcliffe, an 18-year-old student, was hit by a car which had failed to stop for police in Oadby, Leicestershire on January 19. Off-duty PCSO Holly Burke, 28, was hit by a car being pursued by police in Bearwood, in Sandwell, West Midlands, on January 22. On the same day, a 26-year-old refugee from Eritrea died when she was hit by a 999 response car in Walthamstow. Jessie Whitehead, 74, was riding a mobility scooter when she was struck by a marked car as it responded to an emergency call in Warwickshire on January 23.
