9 mostly women killed in stampede

first_imgMap of ChattogramAt least nine people, mostly women and childrenh, were killed in a stampede during distribution of charity items by a private company in Satkania on Monday.The incident took place when the management of Kabir Steel and Re-Rolling Mills (KSRM) was distributing iftar items in Nolua union around noon, said the local police.Nine of those who sought the items died on the spot during the stampede.However, news agency UNB gave the number of victims at 11.Six of them were named as Hasina Akter, 30, Nur Ayesha, 50, Rina Begum, 20, Kuntuni Begum, 13, Rashida Akter, 54, and Jotsna Begum, 25.The women came from adjacent areas to take iftar items meant for holy Ramadan.“They died of stampede amid hot weather,” officer in charge of Satkania police station Mohammad Rafiqul Hossain said.UNB quoted deputy commissioner of Chattogram Mohammad Elias Hossain as saying that the stampede occurred as hundreds of destitute people crowded there for collecting iftar items ahead of Ramadan.Satkania upazila nirbahi officer Mobarak Hossain was quoted to have said that the incident took place when the KSRM authorities started distributing the iftar items in front of the house of its owner Mohammad Shajahan.last_img
