Even as the US and Europe reduce their dependence on Gulf oilChina will remain strategically dependent on the Gulf for their energy So will India IndeedNational Security Adviser Shiv Shankar Menon also toured the Gulf recentlyvisiting Saudi ArabiaQatar and Kuwait Though his foray into the region attracted much less attention than Wensthe focus of his visits waslikewiseenergy security (as well as securing Arab investment in India) Both China and India buy oil from Iran (with China accounting for 22 per cent of Irans oil exports)and thus would be adversely impacted by US-led sanctions But both countries have interests in the region that go far beyond oil For Chinathe GCC countries have emerged as a major market for Chinese manufactured goods and food exports For Indiathe region is home to six million expatriates who remit annually close to $20-30 billion almost half of the $60 billion in total yearly remittances by Indian workers abroad Concerns about the fallout of Gulf instability for Indias energy security have risen alongside deepening ties with Israel Indeedwhen Indias foreign ministerSM Krishnavisited Tel Aviv this month to explore possibilities for diplomacy in alleviating regional tensionshe was received with the honours accorded only to Israels closest allies Such diplomatic activism by China and India clearly reflects their shared concern about energy supplies Both countries have so far gone along with United Nations-authorised sanctions against Iranand have publicly demanded that Iran adhere to its commitments as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) But the bottom line for both countries is energy security Both China and India will seek to impress upon the US that any action against Iran aimed at preventing it from developing nuclear weapons should not be at the expense of economic growth and energy security in Asia Given the stake that both the US and Europe have in stabilising and sustaining global growththeir policies should be aimed at ensuring ChinaIndiaand other newly industrialising Asian economies can take up the slack created by the slowdown in OECD economies Soeven as Prime Minister Wen travels westthe West must travel east A trilateral initiative by the USChina and India in the Gulfaimed at facilitating a resolution of historic problems in the regionwould benefit global growth and stability As the regions biggest and most influential countrySaudi Arabia could play a positive role by inviting the US and Asias two giants to work jointly towards a peaceful resolution of the Iran problem While Russia has its interests in the regionit has little or no stake in arresting the rise in oil prices that instability in the Gulf would trigger China and Indiaon the other handwould be badly affected by another surge in oil prices India can ill afford a further economic slowdownwith GDP growth this year forecast to fall to 75 per centcompared to the five-year average of 9 per cent in 2003-08while inflation remains highpartly owing to rising energy prices Deepening malaise there and in China would disrupt global growth at a time when Europe remains mired in crisis The UStoocannot afford military conflict in the Gulfgiven its need to shore up the domestic foundations of its economic power As a resultthe time is ripe for fresh ideas and innovative initiatives aimed at addressing Asias energy-security concerns in the Middle East Increasinglythose ideas and initiatives will come from Asia itself The writer is director for geo-economics and strategy at the International Institute of Strategic Rana Daggubati hopes that The Ghazi Attack said to be the first ever Indian film to be based on underwater war will pave way to more such movies in the future According to Rana The Ghazi Attack which is India’s first underwater war-at-sea film will push other filmmakers to explore this genre “When Baahubali happened there was never a war film made in decades Then we had two films that came in one film Rudramadevi I did a cameo and other was Gautamiputra Satakarni It’s important that somebody breaks that ice and it’s important to break it correctly” Rana told PTI The actor worked very hard to put everything aesthetically correct in The Ghazi Attack “With this film we knew it’s the first underwater war film we were making We had to make it aesthetically correct as we did not had a reference point” he said Not many are aware about the underwater tale of courage and patriotism of the men aboard Indian Submarine S-21 who destroyed the Pakistani submarine PNS Ghazi when it ventured into Indian waters to destroy the INS Vikrant “We consulted so many Navy people before we started shooting It’s the film that glorifies the Navy giving them the due credit It’s a big incident that has happened in 1971 before the war” the Telugu star said “It’s the first Naval submarine-based film in this country the West has made so many films like that We have the fourth largest Navy in the world and we don’t have a film on the Navy which is quite surprising We were happy to make one” he said More from the world of Entertainment: Another challenge for the Dum Maro Dum actor was to get the VFX and CG (computer graphics) correct in the film so that the underwater action sequences look real “As nobody had done submarine water texturing before in India it took time for us to work on it Finally we have got a decent product (referring to film) Many people who have seen the film are happy and they did not expect this kind of visual effects” he said The film is up for release on February 17 and the makers launched the trailer on January 11 The Baahubali actor took time to release the first look of The Ghazi Attack as he wanted everything to be in place “We were sure we did not want the look of the film to come out till the time we were confident and ready We finished the film in mid-March (last year) by the time I saw the copy it was January So it took a long time to get everything correctly” he said Also read:The Ghazi Attack: Rana Daggubati said he missed sunlight during shoot Also featuring Taapsee Pannu Kay Kay Menon and Atul Kulkarni in the lead the film has been made government at the Centre look bright this summer Between them the Congress and the BJP together bagged 322 seats in 2009 This time the big two may not take home even 280 That leaves out nearly as many in a 542-seat contest And since any third formation is likely to get the support of 100-odd Congress MPs we are actually talking about a 180-seat strong front For surely out of 260-odd non-Congress and non-BJP MPs at least two-thirds can come together in an alliance Mayawati PTI If only politics followed such simple arithmetic Look at the 2009 Lok Sabha Barring two Left outfits there are five parties with two seats each 12 parties with a single MP each and seven independents No stable government can be formed with long-term dependence on them That leaves 30-odd MPs out of the calculations Take out the sworn allies of the NDA and what remains of the UPA And what we are really left with are parties such as the AIADMK DMK Left Front TMC SP BSP JD(U) TDP BJD and NCP If J Jayalalithaa emerges as the non-Congress non-BJP prime ministerial candidate none of these parties except the DMK will have any major issues joining the government or supporting it from outside In such a scenario the numbers add up quickly Between them Jayalalithaa Mayawati and Mamata are expected to win at least 90 seats Add 15 each from LF SP and JD(U); another 35 between BJD TDP and NCP That makes it 170 Jaya can count on smaller players such as Lalu Yadav Farooq Abdullah Jagan Reddy Ajit Singh or Deve Gowda for at least another 10 MPs However a number of these parties — for example NCP BJD TMC and Jaya herself — may flock to the BJP if the party touches the 180-mark In fact the question of a third front government arises only if the BJP stops well short of that magic figure Why 180 Because that takes the likely NDA (Shiv Sena and SAD) tally close to 200 Add TMC AIADMK BJD and NCP — it’s well past the 272-mark Barring a Congress miracle the biggest obstacle to the BJP’s 180-seat run is Mayawati Because considering the party needs to add 70 seats to its 2009 tally Uttar Pradesh is where Narendra Modi will be fighting his most crucial battle Of the states under a so-called BJP swing the party can gain substantially only in Rajasthan where it won just 4 out of 25 seats last time But there is no room for significant gain from Madhya Pradesh Chhattisgarh Gujarat and Himachal where the party won 44 out of 70 seats in 2009 Altogether these five states may account for no more than 25 extra seats The BJP will also gain in Uttarakhand Punjab and Delhi But these small gains are likely to be offset more or less by a loss in Karnataka The Modi wave is likely to earn a few extra seats in Odisha and Maharashtra In the best case scenario for the party it will have to depend on Bihar and UP for at least 35 of the additional 70 seats it needs Even if BJP wins half the seats in Bihar its 2009 tally of 12 will improve only by 8 seats That leaves Uttar Pradesh where the party must add 25-30 seats to its 2009 tally of 10 Between them a cornered Samajwadi Party and a waning Congress will still take away at least 20 out of the 80 UP seats But the real fight here is between the BJP and the BSP After the riots the Jats have apparently abandoned Ajit Singh for the BJP But Mayawati’s gain is bigger because the Muslim voter is disillusioned with the SP and unlikely to bank on a weak Congress If the Dalit-Muslim vote helps Mayawati bag at least 35 seats the BJP will have to settle for less than 25 If BSP insiders are to be believed Behenji is eyeing a 40-plus tally Such a show by the BSP may limit the BJP’s national count to 160 and throw the gates open to the possibilities of a third front government As the leader of the third largest party Mayawati is likely to demand prime ministership for herself rather than back Jayalalithaa Besides neither Jaya or Mamata can claim the moral high of reining in the BJP even if they sweep their respective states Bengal and Tamil Nadu do not figure in the BJP’s scheme of things and the party can reach the 180-mark without a single MP from these two states The real battle is Mayawati’s and it will be difficult to deny her the spoils if she succeeds But of course Mayawati’s prime ministership may upset the numbers game that looks so positive for Jaya Since Mulayam Singh cannot back his arch rival — and since the support from a depleted DMK cannot compensate for SP’s at least 15 MPs — Mayawati’s third front may fall short of the 180-mark by 10-15 MPs It won’t matter if the Congress goes well beyond 100 seats and compensates for a weaker third front Or if Mayawati really brings 40-plus MPs herself But these appear distant possibilities As it stands now Mayawati is the third front’s only bet to bring it into the reckoning by stalling Modi But if she succeeds and demands her rewards the front may never add up Jakarta: A man has been arrested for trying to board a Garuda Indonesia plane bound for Saudi
